A vibrant mid-century Orientalist oil painting by Swedish artist Bertil Widbrant, dating to the 1950s and depicting a lively North African market scene filled with color, architecture, and everyday street life.

The composition captures a sunlit marketplace framed by traditional North African architecture, with market stalls lining the narrow street beneath vividly striped awnings. Small figures dressed in colorful garments animate the foreground, while an arched gateway draws the eye deeper into the scene toward additional figures beyond.

Widbrant uses loose, expressive brushwork and simplified architectural forms to convey the atmosphere of the market rather than precise realism. Warm terracotta, ochre, dusty rose, and cream tones dominate the architecture and ground, beautifully contrasted by the clear blue sky and strong accents of red, green, yellow, and violet throughout the market stalls and figures.

Signed “B. Widbrant” in the lower right corner, the artwork is presented in a substantial vintage wooden frame finished in layered cream, beige, and muted gilt tones, complementing the warm palette of the painting.
